Shara Club Gets Young Achievers Ready on Bill Gate's VR Video!

Fan Shi   Shara Club  Yali High School   Sep 29th 2017

In February 2016, Shara Club completed an observational study in Kibera Slum’s education condition. I walked along Uganda Railway that ran along Kibera Slum until reaching Kibera’s outermost area. There was a little gate signaling existence of a shortcut, in which I found Young Achievers, a little primary school. Children were reading out loud in classrooms surrounded by plants and flowering trees, which is a distinct contrast with muddy, messy paths elsewhere within Kibera.

A teacher immediately came to approach us, and warmly showed us the way when I asked for a shortcut into Kibera. The teacher quickly fetched the head teacher, a young-looking woman claiming to have retired, when I happened to ask her about the school’s condition.  The head teacher was teaching in a kindergarten class when she looked out to us, but didn’t leave her job right away.

The head teacher told us that her husband grew up in Kibera Slum and had deep understanding of difficulties involved in pursuing education. After he retired, this couple founded this school. The head teacher warmly guided us to her simple office and started introducing to us various aspects of the school’s condition. I asked the head teacher what I can do to help Young Achievers. The head teacher gave us a list: desks, chairs, textbooks, classroom expansion, etc. When I leave, I noticed a row of bright yellow plastic bottles by the classroom and realized that the school didn’t have water supply. I asked the head teacher right away, and she admitted this fact. Over a hundred student and staff in this school can only use water saved in plastic bottles. There wasn’t reserve system, and water use was severely constrained. Immediately, I decided to solve the problem for Young Achievers using my personal saving in the name of Shara Club. I told the head teacher that we’re leaving Kenya right away, so we’ll let Michael get her a water tank if we haven’t time to do so. The head teacher suddenly looked disappointed. The mutual distrust common in Kibera Slum deprived her of the hope that Michael would make good on this task.

I quickly discussed with Michael to contact the tank dealer, negotiated a fair price of 87,000 Kenyan shillings, and convinced the friendly dealer to accept payment in US dollars (no time to exchange). The dealer can send the tank to Young Achievers on the following day, so I agreed with the head teacher to meet at school at 13:00 on the following day. However, the head teacher lose contact when I called her at noon on the agreed day. We still hauled the tank to school by truck. Because it was Saturday, there were no students at school but a single teacher who exclaimed “The head teacher gotta be in church. She goes there to pray every Saturday.” When the head teacher rushed to school, it looked like “OMG” written all over her face. “I thought you weren’t coming, so I was praying in church all the time.” She said as we all smiled.

After returning to China, I kept contact with the head teacher and launched public fundraising to sponsor two simple restrooms and two roomy, luminous classrooms. With water supply, restrooms and commodious classrooms, Young Achievers achieved the basic readiness for a free lunch program. On 14th September, Bill Gates published an article named 《比尔·盖茨:与非洲的孩子共进免费午餐》on his We Chat Official Account and a VR Video called I’m 8, in which I found Young Achievers presented as an example of school lunch’s benefit! I immediately sent a note to Mr. Gates, because Shara Club plans to start free lunch program in Young Achievers and other selected Kibera Slum schools!
